At auction without reserve, and announced to the world: Truitt House!

Fully restored and re-imagined as a charming bed-and-breakfast, this timeless estate originally completed in 1909 for a wealthy businessman and located in downtown Suffolk, VA, dazzles and delights with its stately portico of six massive white columns, first-floor chef’s kitchen equipped to wine and dine dozens, and an enormous third floor that was once a grand ballroom.

Truitt House is a 8,500 sq-ft masterpiece, a hidden gem selflessly guarding its place of prominence just off Main Street and restored to its former glory by noted architect Seth Ballard of Ballard+Mensua Architecture…with nothing to equal its classic aesthetic + perfect location anywhere in Virginia.

Accommodating up to 10 overnight guests in six total bedrooms, with four that are divided by a large landing on the second floor, guests are ensconced in luxury and allowed plenty of private space for low-key R&R in a history-book-like setting, conjuring the mystique of the long-lost and simpler times…

In the late eighties, 204 Bank St was registered as a Historic Site on the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places.

The home’s six bedrooms feature ensuite bathrooms, beautifully-renovated with Italian marble, and Tiffany light fixtures that catch the eye with oblong crystals said to perfectly mimic the shape of those on the original bedroom overheads.

1st Floor features include the octagonal study, or library, which features flooring, trim, and mantle crafted from incredibly rare Curly Pine, said to be sourced from a single tree and featuring a unique, burled pattern. Four sets of French doors, Art Nouveau light fixture, rich emerald green walls, and an original oil painting permanently mounted above the fireplace complete the space.

The main area of the first floor, an enormous center hall with a beautiful marble fireplace, features 14-foot ceilings and Palladian windows that flood the rooms with natural light and give the entire space an expansive, palatial feel. Two stunning marble powder rooms are nearby.

A huge formal dining room on the first floor features a marble fireplace, wainscoting, and reproduction vintage wallpaper, and joins the living room via the foyer to form a much larger entertainment space, opening on either side to two terraces flanking the building.

The living room includes a delightful musician’s mezzanine that is accessed via a small, winding staircase. The living room and dining room both include a pocket window that raises to the ceiling, allowing access to the terraces.

Perhaps one of the most charming rooms in the house, the Butler’s pantry, features new custom cabinetry with 200+-year-old Cypress countertops and backsplash, with the largest Shaw farm sink that was available when the restoration was done.

The main kitchen is a gourmet chef’s dream! Featuring unique green countertops, and custom cabinets designed by Seth Ballard, the kitchen also packs a Thermador 6-burner gas range with steam-oven, warming oven, and full-size electric oven. Massive amounts of storage in the kitchen cabinets. The pantry has an additional ice maker, a three-compartment sink, and a stacking washer/dryer. The nearby breakfast room is stay-all-day comfortable and features brick walls with quarter-sawn Oak paneling, and a massive fireplace.

The staircase ascends up 4 flights of stairs to what was originally a massive ballroom that has been converted to the owner’s private suite with an additional washer/dryer in a small kitchen. It includes two bedrooms, large living area, and a bathroom. There are three walk-in attic spaces housing AC equipment and offering substantial storage. There are two new water heaters with expansion tanks (April 2022) also on this level. The owner’s suite, which conveniently offers an adjoining sitting room, is stylishly appointed with a luxurious leather sofa and chairs and also provides access to a wide balcony overlooking the home’s solid marble front porch below. Magnificent view!

The second floor offers four large bedrooms, one with an adjoining sitting area, all with luxurious private baths, and all bedrooms have individual thermostats.

Large steel support beams in the basement and elsewhere (very rare in private homes of this era) and a lovely marble trim surrounding the exterior’s base are a few of its many unique and valuable details. Exterior walls are 16 inches of brick, and had to be painstakingly repointed.

Another marble porch outside the back door leads to the home’s original carriage house, still in a state of disrepair, but which could someday be transformed into a restaurant, luxury boutique, or executive office spaces.

Entertainment and cultural options abound within walking distance of the Truitt House’s location, including a Cultural Arts center, several museums, wine shop, and the Nansemond Brewing Station.

Rare and one-of-a-kind, The Truitt House is going to the highest bidder on auction day.
